Networking events provide ample opportunities to encounter new faces, and more importantly, new ideas. However, for many, the notion of a networking function conjures up images of salespeople aggressively pushing their services. This misconception was the major challenge Funktionality was confronted with when given the opportunity to work in conjunction with Specix, a marketing company specialising in the architecture and design industry.
Given the brief of producing a “creative networking event that gave exposure to a range of suppliers”, the Funktionality team tirelessly set to work on creating an experience that would entertain, communicate and inspire. We sought to change the negative preconceptions associated with networking exhibitions, and instead create “a new experience with a difference”.
- Concept development
- Layout design
- Assistance and guidance in creation and setup of stands
- Styling and theming
- Onsite event management
What we did
The client had selected Cruise Bar for its exquisite and atmospheric backdrop of Sydney Harbour. The Funktionality team then developed the concept of a themed exhibition, and settled on “HMAS Specix” to befit the venue. We were able to bring this theme to life with our stylistic flair by incorporating nautical inspired pieces throughout the room.
To curb the aforementioned networking issue, Funktionality instructed all suppliers to develop a mini game out of their products. This unique concept ensured that interaction between suppliers and delegates was easily facilitated and that delegates had a more enjoyable time learning about the products and services on offer. Funktionality were of course on hand to provide assistance with idea generation for these suppliers if necessary.
Examples of activities that were implemented on the day include:
- Puzzle stations;
- Poker tables made from the supplier’s laminate product;
- Putt-putt golf using shower heads;
- And a passing comp through the plasterboard station.
All of these activities were met with enthusiasm from the delegates, many of whom commented on how pleasurable the entire exhibition was compared to previous ones they had attended.
A passport system was also used, whereby delegates were issued with a passport upon arrival and encouraged to visit every stall to get their booklet stamped. All completed passports were then put in a draw to win a major prize. This, in combination with the supplier activities, ensured that guests were adequately motivated to approach the stallholders to acquire more information about their products and services.
Where Funktionality’s unique flexibility came into play was in its collaboration WITH the client. Funktionality recognises that clients are often more than capable of managing a venue or registration for an event, but other elements may be beyond their expertise. Funktionality uses its creativity and broad range of skills to complement the client, ensuring the event is on mission, cohesive, and successful.
As evidenced from our work on HMAS Specix, we are specialists in devising event concepts with individually tailored design elements that fully incorporate the most impactful aspects of event production, including: styling and theming, entertainment, audio visual, floral decorations, exhibition stands, and signage and decals.
We are able to achieve this by working closely with you to ensure all pieces of the event puzzle fit perfectly together – ensuring you get the outcomes you desire. We strive to deliver an unforgettable experience, rather than just a successful event, and leave a lasting impression on clients and guests regardless of our level of involvement.
The overall event was a huge success, with all of the delegates abuzz about the exciting activities they had participated in. Suppliers also gave the exhibition rave reviews, and commented on how the buzz of HMAS Specix continued long after the event had ended.
“The Funktionality team has been a pleasure to work with. Their ability to bring life into the event from conceptual stage flowed through fluidly. It was crucial Specix’s inaugural architectural design networking night be memorable and successful; task achieved and well done. I would personally like to thank Scott, Kate and their team for making HMAS Specix a huge hit and I look forward to creating future events with them” – Janelle Sultan, Specix.
